History: The Yorkshire Terrier was developed in northern England during the Industrial Revolution as a breed to work in the various mills, mines, and factories as a rat and mice exterminator. The breed was larger in its early history, but has since been selectively bred to a considerably smaller size. As their size decreased, Yorkies became more and more of a companion dog than a working dog and was seen in the laps of many wealthy women. By 1880, the Yorkshire Terrier had made its way to the United States, where it quickly became a favorite among the upper-class. The Yorkshire Terrier was recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1885 and has since become a popular companion for many families.

Yorkshire Terriers are highly adaptable dogs. They tend to do well in apartments as well as larger homes with fenced yards where they can run. They are sensitive to heat and to cold. Due to their small size, they may need to bundle up in some winter dog gear to stay warm while out on walks when temperatures drop.

Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about health tests or clearances that have been done.

However, if the documentation is not important to you, then you can find a breeder where the documentation is optional. If you opt to not get the documentation at birth but may want it later, then keep in contact with your breeder.

Bay Area Yorkies are one of the best Yorkie breeders in California. They offer a wide variety of Yorkies, from teacup Yorkies to standard Yorkies. They always have a good selection of Yorkie puppies for sale.

One of the most notable features that make the Yorkie an excellent companion is their petite size. If you have a small budget, this dog breed is pretty manageable since it does not consume much, both as puppies and as adults. Also, Yorkies adapt very quickly to apartment living. However, just because they are a small breed does not mean that they lack specific nutritional needs.

Secondly, you can use the chew toy as a fetch toy, which is a great way for your Yorkie to exercise. The rubber materials are great for soothing teething puppies as they massage their gums gently. In addition, the rubber can be very comforting for anxious puppies, and it helps calm them down.

Chewing toys are necessary for dogs of all ages. At the end of the day, the cute puppies that we adore have the animal instincts that they need to satisfy. The chew toys can help them fulfill this part of their nature without any distractions.

Some dogs are perpetual puppies -- always begging for a game -- while others are more serious and sedate. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog.

In 1861, a Yorkshire Terrier was shown in a bench show as a "broken-haired Scotch Terrier." A dog named Huddersfield Ben, born in 1865, became a popular show dog and is considered to be the father of the modern Yorkshire Terrier. The breed acquired that name in 1870 because that's where most of its development had taken place.

Set limits, and your Yorkie will be a wonderful companion, but if you spoil him, watch out! Start training when they're puppies, and you'll have much better luck than if you let them have their way and then try to correct bad habits.

In general, Yorkies are receptive to training, especially if it brings them attention for performing cute tricks or performing in agility or obedience trials. They can be difficult to housetrain, however, because their "accidents" are so small and easy to clean up that people let it slide. That's a mistake. It's better to show them where to go from the beginning and reward them for doing their business in the right place. When you make the effort, you can end up with a very well trained Yorkie indeed.

Because of their small size, Yorkies aren't suited to families with young children. Most breeders won't sell puppies to people whose children are younger than 5 or 6 years old. It's just too easy for children to drop them, step on them, or hold them too tightly.

As a trainer and behavioral consultant, the biggest problems I see with Yorkies have to do with how their owners treat them. If you carry your Yorkie everywhere, you're telling him that you think the world is too terrifying for him to walk around in.

Now, you do need to take precautions! There are indeed dangers lurking everywhere for toy dogs. The trick is to let your Yorkie walk on his own four feet as much as possible, while still keeping an eagle eye out for real danger.

Show dog coats are sculpted just so, to win ribbons. But those styles are woefully impractical for a family companion. Many show dogs have to be carried everywhere or confined to crates or concrete kennel runs so they don't get messy playing in the back yard.

In my Respect Training book for puppies, I explain why you should always encourage calmness indoors. A dog who dashes around, jumping and barking, is keeping himself in an excitable, over-stimulated state of mind. That isn't psychologically healthy and usually leads to behavior problems.

So try to take your Yorkshire Terrier outside. You can keep a Yorkie in an apartment with no yard. But he'll be much happier with a fenced yard, however small, where he can stretch his legs and run around.

The Yorkshire terrier's most notable feature is its coat, which is long, fine and straight. The hair is a steel blue color on the body and tail, and elsewhere it is tan. The tail is usually docked to half its natural length. Long hair on the top of the head is another characteristic feature and is often tied up with a ribbon, giving the dog a jaunty appearance. 041b061a72
